Looking outside watching
Watching the world fly by
Sitting back an invisible hand guiding my life
Parents tell me where to go
Couches tell me how far
Colleges tell me what to learn
Teachers tell me how to learn it
Friends tell me what to do
Siblings tell me how to do it
Looking outside
Watching my life fly by.

The repetition of the phrase "tell me" hits the reader in the forehead. Also, the close similarities between the first two and last two lines are powerful; it is like a camera shot zooming in from a world view of many people to a close up of a single person. Titling the piece "Control"? Brilliant!

I like the lines "Colleges tell me what to learn / teachers tell me how to learn it" because that is exactly how school fels like sometimes. I also lik ehow you used the same lines to begin and end the poem, bringing it back to the beginning. I also like where it says "sitting back", because of they way that makes it seem like the narrator is letting it happen, instead of being forced to follow everyone else.
ReplyDeleteI love how relatable this poem is and how such simple words can sound so intense.
