March 4th homework

Homework for TODAY or TONIGHT:

Eavesdrop on people talking. Listen in on others. They can be friends at lunch, people in gym class, the couple sitting in the row next to you in math, your parents, your siblings, teammates, coworkers, a family ahead of you in line at McDonald’s.

Your goal is to LISTEN to how people talk and record it. It doesn’t matter what is said. Just listen in. You can record what they say in a couple of ways:

· You can actually record their conversation on your cell.
· You can videotape them. (They might notice, though. Be careful.)
· You can listen and remember what they say.

Ultimately, I want you to walk in with 5-10 “lines” written down tomorrow, Friday, March 5th.

Try to notice how people speak. Do they speak in complete sentences? Do they wait and take turns or speak over each other? Are they really listening to one another? Which words do they stress? How are you going to show that those words were stressed when you write the lines down? If they talk over each other or interrupt each other, how will you show that when you record the lines?
